Hugh S. Fairman is a 1958 graduate of Princeton University, where he majored in Analytical Chemistry. Mr. Fairman spent the early part of his career in the chemical coating industry, specializing in exterior exposure, corrosion control, and accelerated weathering. When he left the chemical coatings field, he was general manager of the powder coating division of a major chemical coatings manufacturer. During his career in the chemical coatings field, Mr. Fairman obtained great expertise in the field of color and appearance science, a field in which he is widely published. At the present time, he is actively engaged in this area of color science as a partner in Hemmendinger Color Laboratory, 438 Wendover Drive, Princeton, New Jersey 08540. Hemmendinger Color Laboratory makes and calibrates material standards used in the calibration and verification of spectrophotometric analysis. He is also active in Resource III, Inc., P. O. Box 490, Tatamy, Pennsylvania 18085, a company engaged in the development of third-party software for spectrophotometric analysis and computer color-matching. In addition, Mr. Fairman consults for clients in the color and appearance field with particular reference to precision and accuracy of spectrophotometric measurement. Mr. Fairman's fields of expertise in color and appearance include metamerism, and tristimulus integration. Mr. Fairman is a past President of the Inter-Society Color Council, having served as President of that organization during 1990-1992. He is the former United States representative to the Association Internationale de la Couleur (AIC), serving in this capacity during 1988-1992. The AIC is the world international body in color science.
At home in the United States, he is a member of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Committee E-12 on Appearance. He has been particularly active in ASTM work guiding numerous new test methods and revisions of existing methods through the balloting procedure.
